FAQ: Should promotional content on 3rd party sites link back to my blog or website?

The correct answer to that is Yes. But let’s get more specific and talk about exactly where and when you should be linking – and why.

There are three aspects to an inbound link you need to consider:

1. What kind of platform the link comes from
2. What kind of traffic is looking at that link
3. What they expect to see when they click on the link (are they expecting to read more about the pain or are they ready to buy the solution?)

This week, we have been working on major updates to the member’s area, including an overhaul on Phase Seven – Launch – and all-new in-depth inbound linking and promotional strategies are just one of the many new things you will see on this page.

We talk about the five kinds of inbound links that are used in the promotional plan in DWS.

• 1) Links from video platforms; i.e. Youtube, Vimeo, etc.

Pardon me while I pull out my soap box and dust it off… (in other words, please forgive the rant that is about to ensue <grin>)

In my humble opinion, SEO is a pile of rubbish.

Let’s step all the way back and look at the SEO premise: If I rank #1 for a keyword I’ll get lots of traffic. This traffic will translate into sales and I will make money.

Completely wrong.

Traffic does not necessarily translate into sales. If you are selling dog food and you are getting traffic based on hair spray, yes, some of those people who are interested in how their hair looks will have dogs and might buy dog food from you, but over all your sales will suck.

Basic, I know – but SEO has many such premises.

Let’s look at the idea of “all in title” as being your “real competition”. All in title is about 1 of 20 on-page factors. It’s an indicator of how much attention is given to a keyword, but certainly not the end-all be-all.

What about “all in URL”? That’s a much more rigorous value, or at least it used to be, but now wordpress blogs automatically use the title as the url so you kill two birds with one stone.

In fact, blogs have made it so easy to be rather well SEO’d that along with a few tweaks and some gaming, it’s getting darn hard for Google to figure out where the quality content really comes from – so now Google uses not only on-page factors and off-page factors but you also have traffic signals and social signals to determine who should rank.

And it will not end there – they will keep on adding facets to the algorithms and obfuscating the results until people just plain give up trying to game them. That is their goal.

In light of that, let’s look at what our goal is in terms of putting up a website and having an online presence – to make money. To sell our stuff and feed our family.

And to that end what you need to do is speak to your audience – because it’s the people you TOUCH who will buy your stuff.

People buy stuff from people they know, like and trust.

How do you do this? How do you become a person that someone knows, likes and trusts? You have to understand the person who is contemplating buying your product. What is their pain? What motivates them? How can you talk to them in a manner that they can understand?

To that end we developed the IS-DNA process – a way of finding the questions in the market place and looking at the PAIN behind that question. Understanding that pain will bring you keywords – and looking at the competing pages (i.e. the conversation about that pain) and the searches (the people looking for the solution to that pain) is what you need to focus on to find the keywords that will bring people to your pages that will buy your products.

Use those keywords and speak to your audience – not just on the pages of your website and blog, but in your videos, on your Facebook posts, in your tweets … everywhere. Because you now have in your hands the words people are using to talk about their pain and find the answers.

And talk to them with passion – passion in your titles and passion in your meta descriptions so that people see that passion and relate to you from the SERPS page.

And then you have NO competition on Google.

It doesn’t matter how many people have the correct SEO on their pages because your pages will have OVERWHELMING proof to Google through all the different aspects of their algorithm.

Don’t ignore on-page factors when you create your sites – and certainly when you are on twitter and Facebook and YouTube link BACK to your site – but you link not for SEO but to drive the traffic. Keep your eye on the Traffic Ball – because it’s the targeted traffic that bring you sales.

And all of this put together will put you at the top of the rankings IN ADDITION to having driven traffic from the entire internet back to your site.

That’s market domination – and it includes SEO, but it does not bow to it. Because there is SO much more to the internet than Google.

We got a query in the help desk about tiered linking structures and exactly what our webrings are – we wanted to share the answer.

Question:

Hi All,

A number articles I have read talk about a tiered back-linking structure. I also understand that they generally do not use silo architecture so that probably changes things.

I was wondering if tiered back-linking structures are something you recommend or think is required? On first look DWS seems to use a single layer linking structure.

To be honest I do not understand wr1,2 and 3 except for the fact the wr1 in your main website. Does wr 2 and 3 have something to do with tiers 2 and 3 on a tiered linking structure? Are there any videos which explain all this?

I would appreciate your help please.

Hi Paul,

We don’t talk too much about how to set up the web rings inside of the member’s area because people get confused enough just setting up a single money site and the supporting social media as well as the other 3rd party platforms.

There are some similarities between what we do and the fundamentals of tiered back-linking systems, in that the WR2 rings thematically link to the money site and the WR3 rings thematically link to and reinforce the WR2 sites. However that’s pretty much where the similarities stop.

The content on most people’s tiered linking sites is usually scraped garbage; good enough, for now, to pass google’s sniff test, but it doesn’t really engage readers and it passes VERY FEW visitors on to your money site.

That’s not good enough for us. We’ve developed several methods and radical diversity for our linked sites so that they can become an “extended golden frame” for you – and an asset to your business. And drive traffic and conversions – not just page rank and search engine rankings.

Another big difference between what we do and what others do is we espouse social media integration with each ring so that they are responsible for driving insane amounts of traffic based on an expanded set of keywords. Where you might target 150 keywords on your money site, your rings will normally encompass 2000 to 5000 keywords.

The details for how to construct these rings and what you need to think about in terms of creating links between the different rings, as well as what we have found works best for integrating social media into all of this is something we only teach at certification.

I have to admit, I’m super excited at this point – a 7 year dream of mine is finally coming to fruition. We are working right now to automate the entire construct of WR2 and WR3 based on an “extended structure” of your money site. This means that when you create the blueprint for your money site in Network Empire (a make over of DWS), you will actually be creating the blueprint for all the domains in all three rings, set up the content and create the appropriate linking structure!

We will be able to build the network out for you at a touch of a button and our team can create the framework for the social media structures as well. Then you will put the whole thing into motion by adding content to your money site and regularly blogging. Everything else is on autopilot.

We anticipate that this powerful version of Network Empire will launch in beta mode on 1 March 2013. Only certification members will have will have access to it for probably all of 2013.

Over the Christmas Holidays we spent some serious time digging into the latest changes that Google has made in the values it reports in the Keyword Tool and the Estimator Tool inside of Google adwords. I thought I would share what we found and how it should affect the way you build out your website blueprint.

For a long time Google returned the same value for broad match search and phrase match search – it’s only been very recently that they have started giving unique values to phrase match search.

The way I tend to look at it is that people search by default in broad match – very few people put quotes in their searches. So broad match search volume can a valid estimate for the number of people looking for your keywords.

Take for instance “Phoenix plumbers” and “plumbers Phoenix” – if you were searching for a plumber in phoenix you might type the query in one way one time, and the other way the next time. Broad match takes this into account and gives you the same number of searches for both keyword phrases.

However terms like “Phoenix unemployed plumbers” is also a valid broad match phrase for “Phoenix plumber”. It’s hard to get too far off the mark when you are in a niche. However, when you start getting into broader markets the number of inappropriate phrases included in the search volume can become significant.

So I find broad match search values particularly well suited for niches – it helps you figure out where your best bets are because meaningful keywords will have larger values in broad match. When you are doing research on local markets or niches, the search values for the keywords tend to be so small as to not be tracked by Google. So by switching over to broad match when you are looking at small markets, you actually see more keywords with values and can pick keywords more intelligently because of this contrast. This is why The Last Keyword Tool uses broad match search values.

If you are doing market domination, then it becomes more important to know exactly which terms are being searched for and what the searches for each specific term are. Because phrase match searches values help so immensely there, we use those values in Krakken.

In “truth” when I compare what my “impressions” are as opposed to what the “searches” are reported to be by Google, I find the actual numbers vary widely from both the phrase and the broad match values. So a bit of “salt” needs to be taken no matter which number you are choosing to go by.

When importing your data into DWS for cost and profit estimations, if you are using the broad match numbers from TLKT, you might want to estimate your conversions to be a bit lower – maybe 1/2 to 1 percent lower – just to make sure the estimates DWS is giving you are not unrealistic. The best thing would be for you to run an adwords campaign for your silo terms to make sure you know what your traffic values are and to have an idea of what terms are converting the best.

You realize can take a break and still have “money pages” climbing in the search rankings while you are staring out at a sunset.

(Who knew that a simple whiteboard at a live training event could hold the beginnings of such an integrated and powerful process?)

Distracted with excitement, you set your Iphone to receive  downtime server alerts. You tell yourself that your only real job while you are on vacation- is to get auto-notified if your servers go down from too much traffic.

Pausing, you think better of this.

Instead, you text your genius-level-tech-geek assistant. Why not let your assistant manage your server while you are away as suggested by Sue Bell in the previous day’s training? A single phone call and you set it up so that your assistant will contact you only in the extremely unlikely event of downtime.

Besides, you need a BREAK!

You glance back down at your Theme Zoom Certification notes. As you wait for the Theme Zoom instructors to come back into the room, your next call is to make sure that your online  products and services get proper delivery and customer support while you are away. As you learned from Matt Da Cruz inside the local leads empire course, this can be mostly automated and outsourced anyway.

You drift . . .  imagining yourself on a beach checking your Iphone emails for incoming Paypal sales. (grin)

Your gaze snaps back to the whiteboard.

As you finish copying the diagram to your own notebook you finalize the drawing with a title:

As your newfound understanding of “The Theme Zoom System” washes over you, it becomes clear that you are excited-beyond-hype!

And you also know why!

It is because this is no longer just THEORY! Almost every step in this “perpetual downstream traffic system” process is something you already know how to do! You just connected them wrong or missed a step.

And the few steps that are new are a cakewalk using the Theme Zoom suite of software tools!

In fact, most of the steps in the system could be done by a teenager!

• There are a lot of rumors running around about twitter pages and retweets helping you rank for everything from Press Releases to blog pages. These claims confuse the 3 main issues: Indexing, Ranking (for keywords and long tail shingles), to actual social traffic.
• Social traffic signals are not the same as indexing factors, and no matter what ANYONE tells you, nobody is really sure about how they influence each other. Further, Google is still making up its mind.
• Ranking well (or high) for a keyword term is a different topic than merely getting a term indexed.
• Holding multiple positions (roadblock) for a keyword is another matter as well. Ugly bookmark pages and nasty looking article directories  are not very interesting to me when it comes to “roadblocks”.
• Twitter pages do not get spidered by Googlebot automatically. They simply don’t crawl them. Matt Cutts confirms that here.
• Getting pages crawled is the purpose of such (annoyingly manual) services like (oh my gosh where do I start) Linklicious, Lindexed, BacklinkIndexer, the list goes on and on.
• The theory behind these indexing services is to get you indexed by “forcing’ Google to acknowledge these pages because these indexing services are a “Google-Bot Crawl Orgy” and are getting bots all the time. They mass build little backlink “buffer” pages for you that point to the URL that you have (aaaaargh) copy and pasted into their little 20 dollar per month submitter. Or 40 dollar per month. Or 150 dollars per month.
• The effect of this could be useful (depending upon your definition of “useful”) but is very short lived. As Sue Bell says ” a whole bunch of quick-burn meaningless pages could become somewhat meaningful . . . for a week or a month. Then you gotta ping it again. Some of the services do not have a setting to “ping forever” as they believe their job is done once they have your pages indexed.
• Further these indexing services do not offer RSS feeds INTO their services which annoys the living hell out me. Cut and paste, they say. Seriously? The do offer API’s but I am still trying to figure out why they don’t PARSE the RSS feeds that you can hand them via their API. As far as I know, none of them parse the RSS and create backlinks to your backlinks while you are sleeping. It is NOT a sustainable model.
• They do not offer this RSS in probably for a couple reasons. 1. People don’t use RSS to empower their blog network with Downstream Thinking. In fact RSS is being depreciated all over the place. 2.  If people have to copy and paste, there will no be no server overwhelm. If they gave me an RSS feed in- I would be keeping them busy  all the time parsing and pinging every link within every feed within all the blogs on my automated blog network. Nobody selling a service wants that. Better build my own indexer huh? Ok. Or . . . not.
• There are much EASIER ways to get both a social signal and an indexed social page at the same time, on autopilot. No copy and paste required. This should include things like a twitter tweet-page < https://twitter.com/themezoom/status/283481324197662720 > which I absolutely require because I ONLY use Downstream Thinking. Almost everything else is a waste of time and a huge pain in the ass. Things like social monkey and social adr try to do the same thing with bookmarks and tweets and other mayhem. Take huge amounts of time. Results: marginal.
• Twitter tweets can (and should) be automated downstream of your original blog or blog network.
• This is especially profitable if you have targeted followers that you have either jacked from industry leaders, purchased from targeted sources (against twitters terms of service- not recommended) or built yourself via twitter farming (recommended).
• All social platforms, in fact, should be downstream from your primary site, but with real followers. You can automate some stuff, and not others.
• Tweets are not crawled by Google so you need to take a couple of approaches to get them indexed, which will help for both indexing and ranking.

• Pain in the Ass Method 1) Use the Twitter API and pull the feed (twitter dropped RSS and Atom), import it into yahoo Pipes then use a software or service like RSS Submit. < https://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.rss?screen_name=themezoom > to < http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=a698f333f6eb64d2a121d5514d2f0578&_render=rss >. The API to RSS method is unstable at best. Don’t, for example, try to run the Twitter API through Feedburner. It seems to inevitably break. Most services (including Feed Blitz) do not like the Pipes Feed Created from the Twitter API. That is because Twitter engineers wrote it as an application interface for apps. In other words, like our Google Plus application, if we want to turn Twitter Tweets back into a proper data feed (which they don’t want us to do) we will have to build it ourselves. Again, I am looking for an automated, non-annoying solution to guarantee the indexing of all tweets and links contain therein while converting real twitter traffic, set and forget. Not as easy as it sounds, and this is more to do with the annoying relationship between Google and Twitter.
• Simpler Method 2) Use Twylah < http://www.twylah.com/themezoom > and the Twylah App with any of your twitter accounts. Twylah “power tweets” will often get your link indexed in the Google. If you Google Plus your Power Tweet manually (via the bookmarklet, ugh), your Power Tweet will get indexed EVERY time. Yeah, I took the whole video above to say that.
• If you think I am nuts, here is Matt Cutts Twitter Account: < https://twitter.com/mattcutts > and here is a random twitter page he wrote < https://twitter.com/mattcutts/status/281468973143449600 > as you can see this page is indexed and “Eureka!!” Matt has a Twylah account < http://www.twylah.com/mattcutts/tweets/281468973143449600 > :

•  Retweets do seem to give you a higher chance of getting your twitter page actually crawled and indexed in Google, and this probably happens through a couple of different ways. 1) Embedded tweets onto crawl-able pages (*I am NOT certain of this one, so someone correct me if I am wrong). 2) Tweet Feeds that are located on widgets or datafeeds created more professionally than the API.twitter-to-Yahoo Pipes (yuck) method I mentioned above – preferably APP based, which is what Twylah has done of course. (Love you guys)
• So yeah, I wrote a whole blog rant just to tell you to use Twylah, because I am lazy, and copy and paste does not do it for me. However, I would also point out that I am saying that you should incorporate Google Plus into the mix and get indexed every darn time. Now, this is tricky to do all at once and on autopilot. See, Twylah does not offer an Auto-PowerTweet- and it is not really in their best interest to do so. But this is what I actually need. Why? Because Google plus is Google’s own platform. Almost everything is getting indexed all the time on profiles that have even a BASIC developed “about” persona. (We talk about this in my course called Google Plus Plus.) Another consideration is the “confirmed” tagged next to the twitter account that you should connect to your Google control panel. This confirmation SEEMS to index your tweets faster only when you are social tweeting directly through your Feedburner account. (Oh yeeeeeah, Feedburner, I forgot I could do that).
• Somebody please write a Power Tweet plugin to replace the manual bookmarklet. We are developing something, but it will not be for the public). Or better yet Twylah, give us an RSS will yah? Everyone wants to become the data cul de sac these days.
• Twylah is actually downstream from twitter, and this is more powerful than many currently have considered for automatic content republishing. (Not that I would ever do THAT)
• I would like to see Google PLUS be the end game downstream for social syndication. This just makes sure that everything gets indexed, and then you don’t have to worry about Twitter or Twylah being the last stop downstream from your money blog. You don’t have to mess around wondering if  Twitter or Twylah are going to index and display your blog links, your twitter and twylah pages, or weather RSS blog plugins like IndexingTool.com are going to stop working or slow down your blog. Also, you can use our Google Plus RSS Maker Software to completely CRUSH It when you are done, and pretty much know that anything you EVER publish to Google Plus will get indexed AND ranked slightly above terrible. Sometimes even well.
• This whole Twitter controversy has been an issue since 2010 when Rand Fiskin first addressed it on Quora. A lot has changed since then, but I leave that old Quora post here for “Archival” purposes only:

• But Russell, how do I get stuff into Google Plus Automatically. (cough, ahem . . . exactly). There are evil ways. One not-so-evil way is Hootsuite that will only publish to Google Plus PAGES – which is great, but not good enough for me. The other is a rather undependable wordpress plugin called Gplus Automagic poster. Every so often I will need to go kick-start the darn thing, because it has busted or hung up again on one of my various blogs. Other solutions are in the work. There is a way to publish to Google plus via SMS text, but it does not upload images very well, and looks, well, unformatted to say the least.
